Applicants must be: A Member of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists; In an ophthalmology training post in the UK; Prepared to work towards a doctorial degree. The application deadline is 17 September 2010.

Prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy in the United States, an Analysis of 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) The American Academy of Ophthalmology (Academy) considers this study reliable evidence that diabetic retinopathy and vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy are increasing in adults over age 40 in the United States and that more Americans, especially non-Hispanic black Americans, will be vulnerable to potentially-blinding diabetic retinopathy in coming years.

NICE announces development of further Quality Standards

NICE has announced that Glaucoma will be one of the nine new quality standards that it will develop during 2010/11. These were referred to NICE from the Department of Health following advice from the National Quality Board (NQB).

MHRA Press release - Risk of eye infection with contact lens solution

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is warning people that a manufacturer, Abbott Medical Optics (AMO), is recalling two lots of AMO Complete multi-purpose contact lens solution because of the potential to cause eye infections. AMO Complete multi-purpose contact lens solution may have poor fitting caps on the bottles and so the solution may not be sterile. Two specific lots are being recalled. Quality in Optometry Information Governance audit tool

An Information Governance audit is the latest addition to the QiO range of tools. Practical help and advice are provided together with links to supporting documents and websites to enable practitioners to establish a clinical governance routine to suit their requirements. The toolkit is based on the NHS Standards for Better Health and has been developed by and for optometry with the intention that practices use the toolkit to assess themselves.

NICE Quality Standard Glaucoma - Consultation

NICE are very pleased to announce the dates of the upcoming consultation period for the draft quality standards on Diabetes and Glaucoma. The consultation, for both topics, starts on Thursday 4th November and finishes on Thursday 16th December at 5pm. NICE greatly values stakeholder contributions into the quality standards development process and has found consultation feedback extremely helpful in work on previous quality standards so encourage you to comment. The diabetes and glaucoma draft quality standards can be found on the quality standards 'in development' page from 4th November onwards.
