Cataract Surgery Lens â Now Available to More Prescriptions
Article by Paul W. Hiss
Cataract Surgery is a common procedure in the U.S. Las Vegas Cataract surgery specialists see a variety of patients with varying degrees of vision loss due to cataracts. One common treatment for cataracts is an IOL or Intraocular lens replacement. Most patients undergoing cataract surgery have options regarding the type of IOL to be implanted in their eyes. The choice may depend largely on which type of vision correction will be most convenient for one’s lifestyle. In other cases, co-existing eye conditions limit the effectiveness of certain IOLs, leaving the patient with one clearly best option.
Cataract formation is among the leading causes of blindness. It is characterized by cloudy or opaque areas in the eye’s natural lens that usually develop gradually with advancing age (environmental factors, metabolic diseases and certain medications can also accelerate cataract formation). In Las Vegas cataract surgery is often the preferred treatment in which an IOL is used to replace the damaged natural crystalline lens.
The goal of cataract surgery with a multifocal IOL is to restore some of the near focusing ability of your eye. There is no guarantee that all of the near focusing ability of your eye will be restored. Other factors affect the visual outcome of cataract surgery Las Vegas experts say, including the power of the lens implant, your individual healing response, pre-existing astigmatism, and the function of the ciliary muscles in your eyes. While a multifocal IOL can reduce dependence on glasses, it might result in less sharp vision, which may become worse in dim light or fog. It may also cause some visual side effects such as haloes around lights at night and faint double images when reading. Driving at night may be affected.
Prior to surgery, a number of measurements are done, called biometry, to calculate the power of the intraocular lens that will be implanted in the eye. While the methods used to calculate the power of the IOL implant are very accurate in the vast majority of patients, some inaccuracy may occasionally occur. As the eye heals, the implant can shift very slightly toward the front or back of the eye before a stable position is reached. The amount of this shift is not the same in everyone, and may cause you to see differently from what may have been predicted by the measurements taken before surgery. Patients who are highly nearsighted or highly farsighted have the greatest risk of inaccuracies. Patients who have had Las Vegas LASIK, PRK, or Radial Keratotomy (RK) are especially difficult to calculate precisely. Residual refractive error after surgery may be amenable to correction with eyeglasses, contact lenses, refractive surgery, or repositioning or replacement of the IOL itself.
News from Lenstec however, a provider of technologically advanced lenses for treating vision disorders – today announced that its Precision Series Softec HD Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implant for treating cataracts is available in an expanded range of prescriptions. The expansion announced today makes the Softec HD PS available to cataract patients throughout the most popular range of prescriptions.
Lenstec improves predictability with Precision Series IOLs by reducing the manufacturing variability (i.e., tolerance or margin of error) inherent in any manufactured lensThis reduced variability enables Las Vegas Cataract surgeons to more accurately match IOLs to each cataract patient’s prescription.

eye surgery? any doctors out there?
The lens of the eye has a great deal of power. When the doctor removes the lens during cataract surgery he must replace the amount of power provided by the lens with an implanted lens. BUT, if your mother had to wear quite powerful eyeglasses before cataract surgery the doctor has to take the power of the eyeglasses into consideration also. Rarely, but it does happen, the amount of power in the eyeglasses is very close to the amount of power the eye loses when the surgeon removes the patient’s lens. Therefore, when the cataractous lens is removed it basically cancels out the amount of power the eyeglasses had. In these situations it would not be necessary to place an implant lens in the eye. Hope this helped.well my mum had cataract eye surgery today and instead of replacing her lens with a new one they just took it out without putting one back in. The doctor said that her eye or lens was long and big from her birth so that meant she doesnt need a lens to focus the light. Me and my mum are still puzzling on how the eye can work without the lens. Does anyone know about this? thanks allot.

How much does cataract surgery for dogs cost?$ 5000.00I don’t know an answer to how much. You should just take your dog into a vet for a visit. There are ways of knowing how much your dog can see. Does she walk into things? Can she follow a light in the dark? Can she move around obstacles in the light and the dark? If it ends up being cataracts which they can see with an opthalmoscope, then your vet can give you an estimate on surgery before anything is done or your vet may need to refer you to someone who does those kinds of surgeries. My dog is 12 years old and her eyes are looking pretty cloudy lately. It seems like she can see fine, but there’s not really any way to know. I’m thinking about asking the vet about cataract surgery and was just wondering how much it costs roughly.

One of the biggest lies told by Lasik industry is that dry eye disease is an infrequent, minor, and temporary complication of Lasik eye surgery. The truth is that about one-third of people who get Lasik end up with dry eye disease, and for many the condition is serious, permanent, and untreatable. If you read the comments of Lasik victims who are supporting the efforts of Dr. Waxler to outlaw the procedure, a preponderance of people who say that Lasik has ruined the quality of their lives will cite Lasik Dry Eye Disease. This video describes some of the ways that Lasik Dry Eye Disease can diminish your ability to get your work done and to enjoy your life.

LASIK and PRK surgeries?

LASIK and PRK surgeries?
Teeth Whitening, Lasik ManualIn LASIK eye surgical treatment, the surgeon makes use of a microkeratome blade or a laser to produce a corneal flap. This flap of tissue is then folded back again, exposing the internal cornea exactly where the remedy will take place. Afterwards, the flap is repositioned.
For the duration of PRK laser eye surgery, the surgeon use a cool ultraviolet mild beam to precisely get rid of (“ablate”) extremely very small bits of tissue from the surface of the cornea in order to reshape it. The upper floor of the cornea is truly removed and discarded. This region of the eye will regenerate immediately after the surgical procedure, forming a refreshing layer of cells to replace the removed part.
PRK and LASIK results generally are similar. Most men and women achieve 20/20 or better vision with PRK. But it typically takes more time to entirely recuperate from PRK, PRK leads to more pain than LASIK the initial handful of days right after surgical procedure, and it can take many months for eyesight to return to regular. There also is a better chance of eye infection quickly right after PRK surgery in comparison with LASIK, and a better risk of temporary or permanent haziness of the cornea that might impact vision. Surgeons often only advise PRK surgical treatment to patients that have corneas that are either way too skinny or are also steep for LASIK or other surgical procedure.
Intra Lasik & Femtosecond Lasik is advocate.
The clinical studies demonstrate that, IntraLASIK has an enhancement about standard microkeratome methods, which have a 1% to 3% incidence of problems.

Hello. I’m considering of finding a laser eye surgical procedure owing to my myopia troubles. I can’t recognize though some things about the two sort of surgical procedures. I’ve listened to that in LASIK, the flap in no way heals, physicians say that just to tranquil us. I have heard also that it truly is not ideal for dry eyes, and it can make them a whole lot worse. Also, in PRK, sb informed me that it hurts right after the process and it will take more days to develop. Does PRK dry your eyes, too? I’m waiting for all explanations, many thanks.

Thanks to refractive laser eye surgery, millions of people worldwide no longer need glasses or contact lenses. The Bellevue eye clinic in Kiel, Germany, has many years of experience in the field of eye surgery. Specialist consulting and a careful pre-examination are indispensable before deciding to undergo laser surgery. The medical director of the clinic, Professor Detlef Uthoff, explains the LASIK treatment to the patients, which is the most commonly used procedure for refractive laser eye surgery. Today, more than 20 years of experience and comparable study outcomes for the LASIK-method are available. Even ten years after treatment, no relevant changes in visual acuity are to be expected. Information on the remaining thickness of the cornea needed to prevent damage to the eye has been available for more than 25 years. Since the beginning of the 1990s, refractive laser eye surgery has been based on certified safety standards. Depending on the state of the individual eye, there are several treatment methods and laser technologies to choose from. The entire procedure for both eyes takes about ten minutes. Prof. Uthoff: We now work with a brand new laser, the “AMARIS”. It compensates, for example, rotations of the eye or different positions of the eye which we were unable to treat with other lasers in the past. The procedure using this laser is extremely rapid, essentially taking only seconds. The laser can correct not only near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism …

What is cataract?
Cataract is clouding of the lens, the transparent lens inside the eye that allows light to the retina to obtain a clear picture.
Cataracts usually occur in elderly patients but can occur in young patients, in case of injuries, of general diseases (eg diabetes), the long treatments with certain drugs (eg cortisone derivatives).
What are the first symptoms?
Cataract is manifested by a progressive decrease in visual acuity for distance especially, a change in color and contrast, a feeling of blindness in bright lights.
Senile cataract usually occurs in both eyes, but develops asymmetrically.
It’s good for patients over 40 years to go to control eye every six months.
Congenital cataracts
Appears in infants. Cataracts can occur if the mother had an infection during pregnancy (eg rubella).
Children must go to an ophthalmologist once a year.
When must be made cataract surgery?
Surgery may take place when he was diagnosed cataract and the patient was considered to no longer satisfy. It is not like this cataract to evolve, to become hard for a cataract operation is more difficult and take post operative healing time is longer.
What to do before the surgery?
Depending on the advice of anesthesia patient eat or not eat something light before surgery.
Children should not eat or drink at least 6 hours before surgery.
The patient should continue medication for associated systemic diseases (diabetes, hypertension or asthma).
Patients should not wear make up that day.
How long does the surgery take?
During cataract surgery is variable depending on the complexity of the case.
The patient goes home soon after surgery and control returns to the doctor.
Be sure not to leave home alone.
How is made the surgery?
Before surgical intervention, the patient will be examined by the anesthetist. This, in agreement with the eye surgeon, choose the appropriate type of anesthesia.
Anesthesia, most often, is local injection near the eye or by instillation of drops.
General anesthesia is rarely indicated (eg, children).
Most commonly used surgical technique called phacoemulsification, consists of a small incision in front of the eye lens fragmentation and aspiration using a probe with ultrasound). The implant is then inserted (put) in place of the natural lens behind the pupil. The incision requires no suturing required.
Recovery period
To the patient is getting better in 10-15 days. Visual recovery is complete in 30 days.
Glasses may be prescribed after a few weeks recovery period is longer if the hardness is high or if cataract surgery is more laborious.
The recovery of visual acuity depends on the existence of other eye diseases.
A cataract surgery with implantation of artificial lens multi focal
After cataract surgery with implantation of a standard lens patient needs or distance glasses or reading glasses. If the patient does not wear these glasses will not be as good as a healthy patient. If using a multifocal lens implant only requires wearing these glasses.
Postoperative there are any risks?
There’s always a risk after surgery as for any type of surgery. Infection is the most serious complication after surgery.
What precautions should be take after the intervention?
It is very important that patient refuses to keep a very strict local hygiene. The patient must be very careful the first 72 hours postoperative.
Strictly necessary to perform postoperative treatment, which Pembroke Pines eye doctor say that this consists most often in eye drops instillation of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory.
Patient not to rub the operated eye or put pressure on the eyeball.
Do not sleep on the operated eye.
The patient can take a shower after a week of surgery.
It is normal to be a sensitive eye during surgery.
The patient should wear goggles postoperative period.
Postoperative, the patient can walk, read or to watch TV.
New glasses will be prescribed and the patient after 6-8 weeks postoperative.
Patient should not lift heavy things or that.
The patient can not drive a car until after you get permission from your ophthalmologist.
The patient must use all medication prescribed by a doctor and have no control annual omit indicated by an ophthalmologist.

Laser eye surgery which company is best?
Thanks princeidoc for the tipthe “company” doesn’t usually matter much. there are no real “good” ones or “bad” ones. they’re all about the same.
its all about the individual surgeon who will be doing YOUR surgery, and the equipment he/she uses.
Thanks Alfredo for the tipI’m not from the US but I can tell you this, if you have -8.50 in both eyes, don’t expect 20/20 vision afterwords, LASIK can correct -7.00 to -8.00, depending on the thickness of your cornea, so you’ll probably end up with a refraction of -0.75 to -1.75, before looking at companies get facts straight

What does laser treatment have to do with breastfeeding? Did the doctor explain why you have to stop breastfeeding? I can see if you might have to pump and throw away the milk for a few days to make sure the anaesthesia/drugs don’t go into the baby, but why do you have to stop for months? You can continue to produce milk as long as you are pumping during the time that you can’t breast feed. Unfortunately if it’s a long period of time your baby may not go back to the breast but you could continue to pump and use a bottle to feed. Good LuckYes, you will have to relactate. Either by having your baby nurse, using a Supplemental Nursing System, or just by pumpingI am not sure why you would have to give up breastfeeding fro a couple of months after this surgery – go back to your surgeon/ pre-op clinic and clarify things. I would have thought it would be a week or so at most. I think if you stop feeding any longer than that you will have real problems relactating, even if you pump regularly. Have a look on www.kellymom.com which is ful of useful info about BFThere is no need to stop breastfeeding because of regular laser lasik surgery. Personal healing experiences from PRK?
Thanks Lil Panda for the tipWell my friends and family who’ve been through it recovered in less than a week and were back at work in just a few days following the procedure. Surgery Friday back to work on Monday!
Good Luck! Not be nervous, just relax and pray that all goes well.
Thanks j h for the tipi had it done 4 weeks ago & now am happy to say my vision is great. sometimes blurry after looking at computer for hour or longer but eyedrops clear it up right away. often now i find my vision better than it was before with glasses. as far as pain, i was worried after reading about so much & even doctor said 2nd & 3rd day after would be painful, but i did not have hardly any at all. just dry eyes & doing eyedrops often often OFTEN as directed by doctor & it was sometimes dry like any time you would have normal dry eye. i did tons of research about equipment, methods, and doctors before i got it doen & went with place that was 4 hours from home because doctor used alegreto laser and was on ground floor of laser eye surgery & testing of allegreto machine….. it also meant paying $ 1500 more than the “discount” assembly line places… everything comes down to 2 things !!”everything”!! the doctor & the equipment. 1st time to get my surgery done my doctor even stopped me just before going in room to review options because he was reviewing tests (3rd time testing eyes to make sure of consistancy) done that same day & instead of going ahead with lasik he offered money off price ( because of the hassle) to reschedule for prk, but it was completely my choice to do lasik same day or prk later … most doctors would have rushed a person through and took the money….. good luck and remember your eyes are a valuable assett you are paying someone to operate on

Concerned about my mothers eye sight- cataracts & unhealthy eyes.?
hey cataract operations are very successful and they do thousands everyday, the operation is nothing out of the ordinary etc its a day to day routine and she will be in and out the same day, it will take a couple of weeks for her eyes to heal but after that there should be a good improvement she may also still need to wear glasses but i wouldnt worry too much, she will be fineIf she had cataracts removed, the clouding you see now would not be due to cataract as they do not return after surgery.
What did the eye hospital tell her was wrong, what kind of specialist will she see and why was she referred to the specialist?
You need the answers to those questions to know what treatment she may get, whether more surgery will be needed, and what the outcomes will be.My mother is in her early 60′s. She’s had very bad eyes since birth (she was poor and malnourished) and had an eye (cataract) operation in the 80′s. I suppose the technology has advanced a lot since then. Her eyes now are very visibly cloudy & i can even see zigzag lines fro the old operation (this may be wrong), and her eye health, is of course not very good. I’m so scared she won’t be able to see much…shes gone to the eye hospital here and has an appointment with a specialist in February (which i think is a very long wait)…
I’m realistically not hoping for 20/20 vision … i guess i’m just really worried about her. How successful are operations and things these days?

Cataracts of the Eye
Article by Erin Flanagan
Cataracts are really popular while in the older population. In reality, inside United States, more than half of these more than the age of eighty either have cataracts or have had cataract surgical procedure to right the ailment.
Cataracts occur once the lens in the eye gets cloudy. This results inside the person seeing issues that appear to possess a cloudy or perhaps blurred appearance.
The surface of the lens is mainly comprised of water and proteins. As we age, these proteins may perhaps start to clump with each other creating seeing by the lens far more hard. When cataracts can arise in each eyes, it isn’t going to spread from 1 eye towards the other.
A normal, nutritious lens enables gentle to move as a result of on the retina on the back again in the eye. The retina then transmits these images to the brain which is what makes it possible for us to determine. If the lens is cloudy, the picture transmitted is not sharp and results in cloudy vision.
Along with developing because of age, some might create a cataract soon after damage towards the eye or issues with diabetes or other eye ailments. While cataracts are probably to severely impact vision inside the elderly, cataracts may perhaps occur at any time. People who drink alcohol, smoke, or don’t shield their eyes from direct sunlight might also be at a higher threat of developing cataracts, even at a younger age.
Experts advocate subsequent a healthful way of living together with always carrying sun safety including a quality pair of sunglasses and headgear when outside. Cataracts can readily be corrected with surgery nonetheless it is best to prevent them if achievable.
Comprehensive eye exams can alert your eye health care provider to alterations you might not have in any other case noticed therefore starting the treatment process earlier and generally leading to saved vision.

What is Refractive Eye Surgery?
Article by Victoria Cochrane
Countless people across the globe have turned to refractive eye surgery to correct their vision and relieve them from having to use eye glasses or contact lenses. But what exactly is refractive eye surgery, and how does it work? Refractive eye surgery is performed to improve the refractive state of the eye through a remodeling of the cornea or cataract, and can be carried out by way of various surgical methods – namely flap procedures, surface procedures, and corneal incision procedures. Successful surgery is known to cure common vision disorders such as hyperopia, astigmatism, and myopia, and can often help patients achieve 20/20 vision. The most common methods of refractive surgery today use excimer lasers to reshape the curvature of the cornea. One such method is LASIK eye surgery, which falls within the flap procedures category. During LASIK eye surgery, the surgeon cuts a thin flap of the corneal tissue (with a thickness of 100-180 micrometres), lifts the flap, and removes targeted tissue with the excimer laser. The procedure takes just minutes, while the healing process spans anywhere from a few days to a week. Patients who have received LASIK and other flap procedure surgery have reported instant results following the procedure.Another refractive procedure which uses the excimer laser is LASEK eye surgery. However, this procedure falls under the surface procedures category. During such surface procedures, the laser is used to remove the most anterior portion of the corneal stroma. Surface procedures such as LASEK don’t cut as deep as flap procedures such as LASIK, so they can be performed on patients with thinner corneas. However, healing can take longer than flap procedure surgery, and there is more potential for complications.A third refractive procedure entails corneal incisions, and includes surgeries such as RK (Radical keratotomy), AK (Arcuate keratotomy) and LRI (Limbal relaxing incisions). Interestingly enough, most corneal incisions are made using a diamond knife. However, while corneal incision procedures are still performed today, they have largely been replaced by other refractive eye surgery methods that use excimer lasers.Refractive eye surgery has offered countless people the freedom associated with excellent vision. However, the procedure isn’t for everyone, so it’s important to get the right advice from a qualified professional. If you’re considering such surgery, consult an optical surgeon as soon as possible. A surgeon can conduct all the appropriate optical tests and advise you on the procedure that’s right for you.

About cataract and lens implant artificial
30/1/2012 external link
Cataract is the clouding (end) lens. Natural lens of the eye lens is transparent, responsible for focusing vision. Cataracts lead to partial or total loss of vision affected eye.
Causes : Cataracts occur mainly in age, although its occurrence may be favored by accidents, exposure to caloric radiation, etc.
Treatment : Surgical replacement of the natural lens with an artificial lens opacifiers tolerate such an implant body (because the implant is placed inside the casing natural lens, a structure devoid of vessels and nerves: as a result, the body is not informed of the presence of foreign body )
Risks : You know that cataract surgery is not a walk in the road and also has risks, so it is good to ponder well and not to expensive when it comes to choosing an artificial lens, because implantation is life: although it is a lens implant is not replaced as easily as glasses lens. Pembroke Pines eye doctor say that the choice of model depends largely on the degree of satisfaction and comfort that you will receive. You are asked before to sign an informed consent before surgery, the doctor is obliged operator to inform you of the risk, but also to present all models of artificial lens in the market.
The choice of implant, you should consider the following aspects:
1. Type of artificial lens
Crystalline rigid - Most available artificial lens. Although cheap, have been used by tens of millions of patients with good or very good. Have the disadvantage that the site of surgery is higher and “dirty” shirt faster natural lens. Are there two varieties:
-colored rigid implants (bottom protects the eye but more expensive)
-rigid implants colorless
Crystalline fold - are the most commonly used in countries developed, but the price are higher. Have several advantages over rigid lens: the site of surgery is less, and “dirty” shirt natural lens that is implanted occurs later (hydrophobic acrylic material is better tolerated than silicone only). There are two varieties of crystalline folders:
- colorless foldabille implants: does not protect the back of the eye and visible radiation
- foldabille implants colored bottom that protects the eye. This are divided into two subcategories:
A) permanently absorb those rays have the disadvantage of preventing these functions B) and those having interval photo chromatic (light-colored, colorless to dark) are the most expensive because it protects the back of the eye without contravenes other functions.2. Dimension of the incisions
As the incision (cut) which is inserted to remove cataracts and implant is less, much time will be less hospitalization, results of operations will be better (clearer view) and postoperative pain will disappear faster. Factors pursued: equipping center, surgeon’s skill, age and type of implant cataract. Cataract extraction may be carried out through incisions of 1.2 - 3.2 mm. To take advantage of small incisions to implant lens that do not require wound enlargement, but costs more. Incision rigid lens will require widening to 5.5 - 7 mm. Cataract is difficult because it is hard, if the operation is complicated or if the device fails during operation, everything depends on.
2. Surgeon skills
Are acquired during this, during the entire career of the surgeon, by hundreds or even thousands of operations. Hand surgeon progressively become safer and more accurate approach will take into account the operation all the factors that may influence the outcome and the chance that something unexpected occur is diminished as much as is humanly possible. Most importantly, if something goes wrong, the surgeon’s experience increases the chance that that eye can still be saved. An experienced surgeon who is not willing to risk the patient’s account will only reserve phacoemulsification cases lend themselves to this resolution and cataract operation very hard only small incisions sutured with a wire. If the machine breaks down during operation, without any difficulty can convert to such an incision, as a common practice. In hard cataracts immediate result is even better than after phacoemulsification as to be almost normal again the next day and is perfect within 21 days after wire removal. Discharge and resumption of normal activity can be done immediately without any bans.
4. Age of cataract:
A cataract is the hardness of stone and old chips that infringe jump cornea (eye window) on the inside. In addition, the device must work harder to break an old cataract and vibration generated by the device are sent by the wash fluid front of the cornea, damaging the one in turn. The “laser” must work harder cataract a tough, with the higher risks of complications, the most serious of which is oedematous keratopathy. This fall in the cornea and forms blisters on the surface as steam on the glass. As steamed through a window can not see, so the patient to lose, and the light bothers you.
In time, the blisters burst and nerves are directly touched every movement of the eye or eyelid, with pain, feeling of sand in the eye and permanent tears, suffering which make life a torment. The only treatment is transplantation of cornea oedematous keratopathy (around € 3000-10000), too expensive for most Romanians. Therefore, many patients come to seek out eye: “I do not see it anymore, but at least do not hurt me” - said many of them. To avoid this train full of suffering, get selected for the operation of not too advanced disease, but still see.

Lasik /laser eye surgery?

Lasik /laser eye surgery?
Thanks scythian1950 for the tipThe most common complaint among patients after Lasik surgery is night glare, or excessive “flare” of bright objects at night, which sometimes can make night driving difficult. This problem is being dealt with by the practitioners of the Lasik system, so that it isn’t as much of a problem as it used to be. The idea that “laser beams will zap a hole through your eyeball” comes from a misunderstanding of how lasers are actually used in the procedure. It’s not a “straight laser beam” that’s being used, but a focused one, so that only at a very tiny spot in your cornea is affected by the beam, beyond which the laser light diverges very rapidly into a harmless light pulse.
You might want to talk to the Lasik doctor about “glares and halos”, and see if he’s up to date on it. If he acts like this is all new information to him, or like “what glare and halo problem?”, maybe you better find another Lasik doctor. One common cause of the problem is tha tthe doctor has underestimated the size of your pupil in the dark, so that the slight scarring is within this diameter, and so you have problems at night. Young people tend to have VERY large pupil sizes when dark.
Thanks dlordoftherings for the tipLASIK, an acronym for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, is a form of refractive laser eye surgery procedure performed by ophthalmologists intended for correcting myopia(near sightedness), hyperopia(long sightedness), and astigmatism(cylindrical vision). Many patients choose LASIK as an alternative to wearing corrective glasses or contact lenses.
The LASIK technique was made possible by Jose Barraquer (Spain), who around 1960 developed the first microkeratome, used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and alter its shape, in a procedure called keratomileusis
In 1981, Rangaswamy Srinivasan discovered that an ultraviolet excimer laser could etch living tissue in a precise manner with no thermal damage to the surrounding area.
LASIK surgery was developed in 1990 by Lucio Buratto (Italy) and Ioannis Pallikaris (Greece) as a melding of two prior techniques, keratomileusis and photorefractive keratectomy. It quickly became popular because of its greater precision and lower frequency of complications in comparison with these former two techniques. Today, faster lasers, larger spot areas, bladeless flap incision, and wavefront-optimized and -guided techniques have significantly improved the reliability of the procedure as compared to that of 1991.
Patients wearing soft contact lenses typically are instructed to stop wearing them approximately 7 to 10 days before surgery. One industry body recommends that patients wearing hard contact lenses should stop wearing them for a minimum of six weeks plus another six weeks for every three years the hard contacts had been worn. [2] Before the surgery, the patient’s corneas are examined with a pachymeter to determine their thickness, and with a topographer to measure their surface contour. Using low-power lasers, a topographer creates a topographic map of the cornea. This process also detects astigmatism and other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. Using this information, the surgeon calculates the amount and locations of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The patient typically is prescribed an antibiotic to start taking beforehand, to minimize the risk of infection after the procedure.
The operation is performed with the patient awake and mobile; however, the patient typically is given a mild sedative (such as Valium) and anesthetic eye drops.
LASIK is performed in two steps. The first step is to create a flap of corneal tissue. A corneal suction ring is applied to the eye, holding the eye in place. The step in the procedure can sometimes cause small blood vessels to burst, resulting in bleeding or subconjunctival hemorrhage into the white (sclera) of the eye, a harmless side effect that resolves within several weeks. Increased suction typically causes a transient dimming of vision in the treated eye. Once the eye is immobilized, the flap is created. This process is achieved with a mechanical microkeratome using a metal blade, or a femtosecond laser microkeratome (procedure known as IntraLASIK) that creates a series of tiny closely arranged bubbles within the cornea.[3] A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back, revealing the stroma, the middle section of the cornea. The process of lifting and folding back the flap can be uncomfortable.
The second step of the procedure is to use an excimer laser (193 nm) to remodel the corneal stroma. The laser vaporizes tissue in a finely controlled manner without damaging adjacent stroma by releasing the molecular bonds that hold the cells together. No burning with heat or actual cutting is required to ablate the tissue. The layers of tissue removed are tens of micrometers thick. Performing the laser ablation in the deeper corneal stroma typically provides for more rapid visual recovery and less pain.
During the second step, the patient’s vision will become very blurry once the flap is lifted. He/she will be able to see only white light surrounding the orange light of the laser. This can be disorienting.
Currently manufactured excimer lasers use an eye tracking system that follows the patient’s eye position up to 4,000 times per second, redirecting laser pulses for precise placement within the treatment zone. The energy of each pulse is usually in the milliwatt range Typically, each pulse is on the order of 10–20 nanoseconds. After the laser has reshaped the stromal layer, the LASIK flap is carefully repositioned over the treatment area by the surgeon, and checked for the presence of air bubbles, debris, and proper fit on the eye. The flap remains in position by natural adhesion until healing is completed.
Patients are usually given a course of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops. These are discontinued in the weeks following surgery. Patients are also given a darkened pair of goggles to protect their eyes from bright lights and protective shields to prevent rubbing of the eyes when asleep.
The incidence of refractive surgery patients having unresolved complications six months after surgery has been estimated from 3% to 6%. The following are some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK:
Dry eyes
Overcorrection or undercorrection
Visual acuity fluctuation
Halos or starbursts around light sources at night
Light sensitivity
Ghosts or double vision
Wrinkles in flap (striae)
Decentered ablation
Debris or growth under flap
Thin or buttonhole flap
Induced astigmatism
Corneal Ectasia
Epithelium erosion
Posterior vitreous detachment
Macular hole
Complications due to LASIK have been classified as those that occur due to preoperative, intraoperative, early postoperative, or late postoperative sources
Various surveys have been performed to determine patient satisfaction with LASIK. These surveys have found most patients to be satisfied, with anywhere from 92–98% of respondents describing themselves as satisfied.
Some patients with poor outcomes from LASIK procedures report that they have significantly reduced quality of life due to vision problems, and have expressed concerns over the way that LASIK is marketed to potential patients.Patients who have suffered LASIK complications have published websites in an effort to educate the public about the risks, and to provide forums where prospective and past patients can discuss the surgery.
The reported figures for safety and efficacy are open to interpretation. In 2003, the Medical Defence Union (MDU), the largest insurer for doctors in the United Kingdom, reported a 166% increase in claims involving laser eye surgery; however, the MDU averred that these claims resulted primarily from patients’ “unrealistic expectations” of LASIK rather than “faulty surgery”.A 2003 study reported in the medical journal Ophthalmology found that nearly 18% of treated patients and 12% of treated eyes needed retreatment. The authors concluded that “higher initial corrections, astigmatism, and older age are risk factors for LASIK retreatment.”
Why is it so popular? LASIK has advantages over other procedures, including a relative lack of pain afterward and the fact that good vision is usually achieved by the very next day.
The surgeon folds the flap back out of the way, then removes some corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. The excimer laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to precisely remove (“ablate”) very tiny bits of tissue from the cornea to reshape it. When the cornea is reshaped in the right way, it works better to focus light into the eye and onto the retina, providing clearer vision than before. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.
Both nearsighted and farsighted people can benefit from the LASIK procedure. With nearsighted people, the goal is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. While this is not widely recognized by consumers, excimer lasers also can correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.
In order to decide whether you’re a good candidate for LASIK, your eye doctor will examine your eyes to determine their health, what kind of vision correction you need, and how much laser ablation is required.
Your doctor will also look for signs of dry eye disease, which must be treated and cleared up before LASIK can be performed.
Also, a corneal topographer is usually used; this device photographs your eye and creates a kind of “map” of your cornea. With new wavefront technology associated with custom LASIK, you also are likely to undergo a wavefront analysis that sends light waves through the eye to provide an even more precise map of aberrations affecting your vision.
Finally, the doctor will find out from you any health problems you have or medications you take. Some health conditions will disqualify you altogether for LASIK, but others may just postpone the procedure until a later date

is it that true that after lasik the cornea flap never heals?
9/2/2012 external link
is it that genuine that immediately after lasik the cornea flap by no means heals?
college gurli believe it does it just may possibly consider a while
JenniferLASIK flaps mend…and really swiftly. I am not certain where you acquired the information that the flaps never heal, but that data is bogus.
My husband had LASIK almost two months in the past and he has been told that the edges of his corneal flaps had healed (no way for any dirt to get in) and that the corneal epithelium at the site of the flap had presently developed collectively to create the seal in 24 hrs.
Certainly, dry eyes are really typical following LASIK, but that will get much better as the cornea heals. The halos are also a very widespread event after the surgery, but over time improve a lot.
I, myself, had PRK a month ago. My dry eyes are undertaking a good deal far better. I do not feel like I need artificial tears as often as I use them, but I also have a occupation wherever I am on the pc a hundred% of the time, and now a element time work that is also 100%…maintaining me on the laptop or computer for 14-sixteen hours a day, not blinking as much as I really should…hence, retaining the artificial tears likely.
I do see halos or “firework thingys”. They are turning out to be significantly less and a lot less bothersome…and I think they’re in fact really quite lol. The only time I see them is at night time when the pupils are dilated outside of my lasered cornea. They are getting smaller and a lot less bothersome as the weeks go by…and I am only 4 months out from my surgery.
If you are fascinated in finding LASIK, study two or three surgeons in your place, and get a consultation from your top choice.
The method is quite safe and the lasers of these days are Considerably better than they have been when refractive surgery initial arrived out in the mid 90s.
There actually is not also much controversy. As with ANY surgical treatment, there is some prospective for difficulties even so, the critical complication fee is 5%, and several of these difficulties are because of to noncompliance with the postop directions or surgeon incompetence. The surgeon is the Essential! Do not put your eyes in the hands of the lowest bidder…these are the only eyes you will have. It is effectively well worth spending the cash rather of really going to the marketed “$ 299 for every eye” locations. Pick a surgeon you are comfortable with. Get a record of concerns and concerns with you for them to address.
I do not know exactly where you had listened to that the flap never ever heals. It does…and quite quickly…I had my epithelium taken out and it was healed above in four days! I was afraid as well, but with my surgeon (and he was Great!!) I felt very cozy and in extremely, very capable arms.
I hope I’ve been of some support. Use the backlinks under. There is a ton of info in there…and far more that you can get to from the Laser surgical procedure residence section on that web site. There is even a starting record of some crucial concerns to inquire. Each my husband and I had refractive surgery utilizing a highly advised, quite properly educated, corneal focused surgeon and we have each had extremely very good results.
DrJaleCornea flap heals very quickly as described in reply prior to mine. But the shape of cornea is altered completely. Lasik as nicely as any other laser eye medical procedures is irreversible and can be completed only when for each eye.
Since you are scared of lasik, probably you should contemplate an choice – all-natural vision enhancement by means of eye workout routines. They are less expensive, effortless to do and you have nothing at all to eliminate. Get a seem at this internet site:

lasik leaves a scar for confident…and the flap can be dislodged at ANY TIME following the surgical treatment (even though that would be unusual). it would take just the correct (or wrong!) variety of eye harm to do it, tho (fingernail in the eye during a basketball game, for instance)
so…thats KINDA correct…
KaitlynIt will cure.. The eye is the fastest therapeutic organ in the human body.
i want to get lasik accomplished but am scared coz of all the controversies! they say that the cornea flap lifted to do the laser medical procedures never ever heals and that it appeals to dust which gather in the eyes above time. and also, ppl have dry eyes/glares/halos forever! pls aid me.
